Before you file

Ten years of residence does not mean your case is ready

The most expensive mistakes happen when an applicant assumes that years of residence are the only condition. Gaps in residence, the wrong legal route, weak evidence or starting a citizenship release too early can change the whole case.

Review my situation

01

Your years must be calculated correctly

Actual residence, continuity and lawful immigration status are assessed together — not just the date of your first permit.

02

Every document must tell the same story

Residence, income, language, family status and citizenship evidence must match the legal route you rely on.

03

Citizenship release is not always step one

First check the route, exceptions and order of events. Do not take an irreversible step based on generic advice.

Your legal route

You may not need to wait the full ten years

Ten years is the general rule for ordinary naturalisation. Specific circumstances can mean a shorter residence period or different conditions.

Ordinary naturalisation

The general rule is 10 years of actual residence in Slovenia, including the final 5 years continuously before applying, with lawful foreign-national status.

Marriage to a Slovenian citizen

A special route may apply after at least 3 years of marriage and at least 1 year of continuous actual residence in Slovenia, subject to the other conditions.

Higher education completed in Slovenia

A person who completed at least a higher-education programme in Slovenia may have a shorter requirement: at least 7 years of residence, including the final continuous year.

Other statutory routes

Birth and lifelong residence in Slovenia, Slovenian ancestry, refugee status, statelessness and other circumstances may lead to different rules.

Not sure which route applies to you?

That is normal. The initial assessment exists to stop you from starting down the wrong path.

Identify the right route

Ordinary naturalisation

These eight groups of conditions are assessed together

Meeting one condition does not replace missing evidence or another condition that has not been met.

You are at least 18 years old

Release from your current citizenship, or proof that you will obtain it — unless a statutory exception applies

The required period of actual and continuous residence in Slovenia with lawful foreign-national status

Sufficient means for the material and social security of you and the people you support

Slovenian language ability for everyday communication, proven in the prescribed way

The relevant conditions concerning criminal convictions and residence in Slovenia

No threat to Slovenia's public order, security or defence

Settled tax obligations and the required oath before the process is completed

This is a summary of general information, not a decision on your eligibility. Special routes and exceptions can change individual conditions.

Documents

Do not spend money on the wrong paperwork

We first create the checklist for your legal route. Only then do you obtain the records, translations and certificates your case actually needs.

Identity and civil status

A valid passport, CV, civil-status records and other public documents relevant to your legal route.

Residence in Slovenia

Evidence showing actual residence, continuity and your lawful status as a foreign national.

Income, language and obligations

Evidence of sufficient means, Slovenian language ability, tax obligations and other applicable conditions.

Documents from North Macedonia

Proof of citizenship, civil-status records and, where required, release documents. We first confirm translations, authentication and the correct sequence.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers to the questions still holding you back

Current official information explained for citizens of North Macedonia.

Legal information reviewed on 14 September 2026.

Can a North Macedonian citizen obtain Slovenian citizenship?

Yes, if the applicant meets the requirements for ordinary naturalisation or a special statutory route. The authority assesses every condition and document in the individual procedure.

Official source

Must I live in Slovenia for ten years?

For ordinary naturalisation, the general rule is at least 10 years of actual residence in Slovenia, including the final 5 years continuously before applying. Other statutory routes can have shorter periods or different conditions.

Official source

Must I give up North Macedonian citizenship?

For ordinary naturalisation Slovenia generally requires release or proof that release will follow, subject to statutory exceptions. North Macedonia has its own release procedure and conditions. Do not begin it until your Slovenian route and the correct sequence have been reviewed.

Official source

Do I need a Slovenian language exam?

Ordinary naturalisation requires proof of Slovenian for everyday communication, generally through a certificate showing a passed basic-level examination. Special rules apply in certain situations.

Official source

Which North Macedonian documents may be required?

The exact file depends on the route. It may include proof of citizenship, civil-status records, family-status evidence and any documents concerning release, with the required translations and authentication.

Official source

What is extraordinary naturalisation?

Extraordinary naturalisation is a special route to Slovenian citizenship under less stringent conditions, granted where admission is in the national interest — typically on scientific, economic, cultural, national, or similar grounds. It is discretionary and decided by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia.

Official source

How long does the procedure take?

There is no single reliable timeframe for every case. Duration depends on the legal route, completeness of evidence, official checks, additional-document requests and, where relevant, the release from current citizenship.

Official source

Can I also arrange citizenship for my child?

An adult who obtains Slovenian citizenship by naturalisation may apply for a minor child if the conditions in Article 14 of the Slovenian Citizenship Act are met. The family situation is best reviewed as a whole.
