FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions About MovingFrom the USA to Slovenia?
Direct answers to the questions Americans ask when planning a move to Slovenia. Reviewed against official Slovenian sources in September 2026.
Can a U.S. citizen move to Slovenia?
Yes. A U.S. citizen can move to Slovenia, but a stay longer than the visa-free short-stay period normally requires a Slovenian residence permit. The correct permit depends on the purpose of the move, such as employment, remote work, business, study, or family reunification.
How long can an American stay in Slovenia without a visa?
U.S. citizens do not need a short-stay visa for Slovenia. They may generally stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area. A residence permit is required for a longer stay or for activities that are not allowed as a visitor.
What residence permit can an American get in Slovenia?
The available residence route depends on why the American citizen is moving. Common routes include employment under a single permit, digital nomad residence, family reunification, study, research, and other purposes allowed by Slovenian law. Owning property or opening a company does not automatically create a right to live in Slovenia.
Does Slovenia have a digital nomad visa for Americans?
Yes. Since 21 November 2025, Slovenia has offered a temporary residence permit for non-EU digital nomads who work remotely for a business outside Slovenia or are self-employed abroad. It can be issued for up to one year, cannot be extended, and requires proof of sufficient monthly funds.
Yes, but a U.S. citizen normally needs the legal right to work. For employment with a Slovenian employer, this usually means a single residence and work permit. The administrative unit issues the permit and the Employment Service of Slovenia provides its consent when required.
Yes. An American can own a Slovenian company. A non-resident normally needs a Slovenian tax number, a company address, formation documents, and the required capital for the chosen structure. A standard d.o.o. requires at least EUR 7,500 in share capital. Company ownership alone does not grant residence or work rights.
Yes. U.S. citizens can acquire property in Slovenia without a separate reciprocity decision because the United States is an OECD member. A buyer still needs to complete the normal legal, tax, contract, and land-register steps. Buying property does not by itself provide a Slovenian residence permit.
An American can retire in Slovenia only if they qualify for a valid residence permit. Slovenia does not grant residence simply because a person receives a U.S. pension or owns a Slovenian home. The applicant must identify a legal residence basis and meet the conditions for that route.
Can my spouse and children move to Slovenia with me?
Family members may qualify for residence through family reunification, but eligibility and timing depend on the main applicant's permit and the family relationship. Digital nomad permit holders have a special rule that allows eligible family members to reunite immediately.
What documents do Americans need for a Slovenian residence permit?
The exact list depends on the permit, but applications commonly require a valid passport, proof of the purpose of stay, health insurance, sufficient funds, and a criminal-record certificate. U.S. documents may also need an apostille and a certified Slovenian translation. The document list should be confirmed before filing.
